Werder Bremen director of football, Rouven Schroder, says that the club will be looking into strengthening the team during January. Concerns about the strength in depth of the team have risen in the last few weeks due to a number of injury problems including to that of star striker Franco di Santo.
The former Chelsea and Wigan man has been one of the best strikers in the Bundesliga this season. He has outscored the likes of Thomas Müller and Robert Lewandowski with six in the league. However, his recent injuries are likely to keep him out for a few weeks and it has threatened to hit the club’s objectives for the season.
The club has struggled with relegation since the start of the season as they have managed just two wins so far. This coupled with the fact that Di Santo may not be available for the crucial matches makes it very important that the club try and strengthen the squad in January in order to get out of relegation trouble. Di Santo’s own future has been highly speculated with several top clubs likely to come in for the striker during January. Schroder recently confirmed that they would not be interested in discussing the potential sale of the 25-year-old, but he says that other areas on the pitch could be strengthened by new arrivals.
"We're looking around intensively to see what we can do.We're busy holding lots of talks. We've got to get it right because we can't just add players to the squad, they've got to be good enough to strengthen us too," said Schroder. Werder Bremen’s form has substantially improved in the last few weeks with the team getting to back-to-back victories. They could not sustain this form for much longer after losing 2-0 to Hamburg during the weekend.
