Arsenal legend Robert Pires believes the Premier League golden boot is likely to be decided between Sergio Aguero and Mohamed Salah this term. Aguero is currently leading the scoring charts with 18 goals but Salah is right behind the Argentine alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane with 17 goals apiece.
Speaking to Bwin, Pires pointed out Aguero and Salah as the main contenders for the golden boot. He added that Aguero has been the better performer when it comes against the top-six but Salah should still provide stiff competition in the race for the accolade, he said: “I think the race to the golden boot is between Salah and [Sergio] Aguero.
“Salah has had another great season and maybe proved a few people wrong who thought he wouldn’t be able to repeat last year’s performances. He has played a slightly different role this season where he has often been more of a striker than a winger so the pressure is on to score goals and he has delivered. I think you’d have to say that Aguero has made much more of an impact against the top-six teams, but there’s no doubt Salah is one of the best players in the Premier League.”
“Salah was the standout performer for the Reds during the opening half of the campaign“ but the goals have dried up for him over the past month. In comparison, Aguero has experienced the exact opposite in terms of scoring form and he managed to bag a couple of hat-tricks against Chelsea and Arsenal “during the previous month“.
In this case, Aguero seems the front-runner for the golden boost ahead of Salah but things could change during the forthcoming months with pressure on both players’
shoulders. Elsewhere, Kane and Aubameyang are also on the hunt and they could yet to push for the individual honour while helping their respective teams in the top four race.
