Werder Bremen chief executive and president Klaus-Dieter Fischer has announced that he will step down from his post at the end of the season in what will be the start of a new era for the club.
Werder Bremen have been one of the top teams in the Bundesliga for several years and Klaus-Dieter Fischer has played a huge role in making them into this position. The 73-year-old said that he has taken this decision due to personal reasons. He says that the job he has done at Werder Bremen has not only helped him at professional level, but also make his life better at a personal level as well.
During his time at the club, he oversaw the signings of players like Franco di Santo in recent years. The former Chelsea man is expected to be the star for the future and he has already been showing a lot of promise. This, however, is proving to be a tough season for the club, as they are in the bottom half of the table – far from the Champions League qualifying places that they were expected to challenge. Fischer, though, is confident that the club will return to its former glory days under the new management. The vice president Dr Hubertus Hess-Grunewald is expected to be named as his replacement.
"I have always had the ambition to determine my departure and that will be at the end of the year. My association with Werder has determined my life and opened worlds that I could not have otherwise experienced. For that I will be eternally grateful and I hope I have provided just as much back. I have never made a secret of the fact that I value our vice president Dr Hubertus Hess-Grunewald as a strong candidate to be my successor,” said Fischer.
