Argentina are fearing the worst for midfielder Lucas Biglia after he fractured two vertebrae during AC Milan’s league meeting versus Benevento. The Rossoneri suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to the bottom club on Sunday and manager Gennaro Gattuso was not pleased with the nature of the embarrassing loss.
Biglia has been a key player for the Argentine national side, having made 13 appearances during the World Cup qualifying phase but his involvement in the summer tournament could be in doubt.Following the Benevento game, Milan confirmed that the midfielder would undergo further examinations on the damage.
A statement read:"AC Milan inform that Lucas Biglia reported a severe lumbar trauma due to an injury during Saturday's match against Benevento. The player has undergone medical examinations that highlighted a fracture of the transverse processes of the first two lumbar vertebrae.A detailed prognosis will be issued in the coming days upon completion of all medical tests."
The Rossoneri were one of the most in-form sides heading into the previous international break but they have since failed to win any of their matches. With just four points from their last six games, the club have now dropped 13 points behind the Champions League positions and they are now in a spot where they could miss out on European football altogether.
Their lean form has witnessed Atalanta BC jump ahead of them in the standings whilst Sampdoria and Fiorentina are not far off from surpassing them with just a three-point deficit. Meanwhile, Argentina are expected to face an anxious wait on the fitness of Biglia who has been their main architect at the heart of the midfield.
Biglia featured in all seven games for Argentina as they reached the final of the 2014 World Cup and losing a player of his calibre is likely to dent the nation’s chances of winning the global tournament further.
